So I am a K-pop fan, have been for a long time. I’m bad with dates so it was around the time BTS debuted(2013). I remember going into work blasting No more Dream.
Been listening to K-pop ever since. Needless to say I was excited when K-pop Demon Hunters came out.
First off the music is phenomenal, the story was good but I wish it had been flushed out, was a bit rushed. So many characters that I wish we had more time with.
I don’t know much about the Korean religious aspect of the movie so I will just talk on how I relate it to my self and Christianity.
Patterns
Patterns are viewed from the start as showing someone as a demon, like a scarlet letter. Demons are horrible, want nothing but pain and suffering. “Takedown” saying what needs to be done to them.
But wait one of the main girls(Rumi) is part demon!? I love the way it shows how she is physically affected by how she tries so hard to hide who she is. Her voice cracking and losing tune as she sings and her anxiety overwhelming her. Suppressing who you are so those you love wont hate you. As she gets closer to Jinu she sees she feels so good around him cause she doesn’t have to hold back.
When she is finally revealed to her friends they are mad and deeply conflicted. I do think they were upset because she was a demon but more mad because she hid it for so long from them and didn’t trust them.
Jinu being a demon yet deep down a really good person, he just made mistakes in life. A great example that you can have this past and have patterns yet they do not define you and you can be so much more.
Acceptance
One of many of my favorite details is that even when she is revealed as part demon and they worked together to defeat Gwi-ma, she is still very much loved and appreciated even with her patterns. The pattern she shows is a part of who she is and she fully embraces them.
I love how the journey both Rumi and Jinu go through to who they really are deep down and grow to not be ashamed of their pasts. Like i said though it was a bit rushed, especially the love story between them. One scene shows her being annoyed by him and trying to he that they are talking and then the very next scene they are fully singing about how they like each other and need to work together. I understand since it was Netflix it needed trimming down but those two scenes needed to flow better.
Songs
-Takedown- I know in the movie it’s a conflicting song. Rumi struggles with it cause she is accepting more of the demon part of her yet her friends are saying all these horrible things about them. When being separate without that context it shows the fight you may have inside with your own demons
-How it’s Done-Perfect work out song. Gets you pumped up to kick some butt
-Soda Pop-Great representation of those cringy K-pop songs that non K-pop individuals think of when they hear the word K-pop. Personally not a fan of the poppy cutesy boy crush vibes but I do have some guilty pleasures.
-Golden- The one you play when you’re a bit down in the dumps. Helps you see the power inside yourself
-Your Idol– THIS SONG, a lot of people showed their love for this song. Very alluring and sexual. Something I noticed, when I listened to this I LOVED IT. I was almost addicted to it. After I started reading my bible and talking to god I barely played it. The other day it came on to my Spotify and I still think it’s a good song but I view it so differently now.
-Free– Love the message of finding people that you can be free with. With these people you can work on your issues. I’ve started to view it as when you first start talking to GOD. I don’t understand why I feel so empowered and good but i like it and WANT to work to be better,
-What it sounds like– My absolute favorite! Rumis voice changes in this song, i feel she sings in a deeper tone, showing her range and vulnerability. Not only showing her mistakes but the other girls as well. Saying I’m deeply sorry and I love you so much. When you’re with people who truely love you they will make you stronger in aspects you struggle in.
I give the structure of the movie an 8/10, music 10/10, animation 10/10, messages 10/10
